Common questions

Sizing, knocking in, delivery and returns. If yours is not here, get in touch.

Sizing

What size cricket bat do I need?

Short handle suits most adults from about 5ft 9in upward. Harrow fits roughly 5ft 4in to 5ft 8in. Below that, size 6 covers about 4ft 11in to 5ft 3in, and size 5 about 4ft 8in to 4ft 11in. If you are between sizes, go smaller — a bat you can control beats a bat you can barely lift.

How should batting gloves fit?

Snug, with about a centimetre past your fingertips. Too loose and the glove twists on impact; too tight and your hands cramp up. Men's fits most adults, youth suits roughly 12 to 15 year olds, boys below that.

How do I measure for a helmet?

Measure around your head just above the ears and eyebrows. Small is roughly 54–56cm, medium 56–59cm, large 59–62cm. It should sit level and not move when you shake your head.

Are pads and gloves handed?

Batting gloves and batting pads are. A right-handed batter takes the right-hand set. Wicket-keeping pads are not handed.

Bats

Do I still need to knock in my bat?

Yes. Every bat we sell is pressed and pre-knocked, which is enough for soft-ball and net use, but give the edges and toe another two to three hours with a mallet before facing a new hard ball. Skipping it is the most common cause of early damage, and that damage is not covered as a fault.

Should I oil the bat?

A light coat of raw linseed oil on the face, edges and back once or twice a season is plenty. Do not oil the splice or the labels, and do not oil a bat with a full protective face sheet already fitted.

Is cracking on the edges a fault?

Usually not. Willow is a natural material and surface cracking on the edges and toe is normal wear. A handle splitting, the splice separating or the blade breaking apart is a different matter — send us photographs and we will assess it.

Can I choose the weight?

Tell us the weight you are after when you order and we will do our best from stock. Willow is natural, so weights vary between individual bats of the same model.

About the gear

Is this genuine BDM equipment?

Yes. Everything we sell comes from the current BDM range. BDM has been making cricket equipment since 1925.

What is the difference between the series?

The Dynamic series carries a bowed profile with weight moved for pick-up. The Extra Thick Bulge range has deeper edges for power. The 20-20 specials are cut for the short format. Gloves and pads follow the same naming, so a Dynamic Super glove pairs with a Dynamic Super pad.

What is English willow nurtured in India?

English willow grown from English stock in Indian soil. It performs well and costs considerably less than willow imported from England, which is why those bats sit lower in the range.
